Character: Arou Naitou
Fandom: Land of the Blindfolded (Mekakushi no Kuni)

History:
"If there were a 'land of blindfolded people', would they understand if somebody could 'see'?
I lost my 'blindfold' a long time ago."

Naitou Arou is an only child, born to a frequently frail (but optimistic) mother and a professional photographer father. He's also a boy with a strange power. While most people live their lives only able to see the present, Arou can see a person or objects past by coming into physical contact with them. This power seems to run in the family (Arou's uncle Sou also possesses it).

When he was young, his power was limited. He could only see a few days into the past, and only when he concentrated on it. Just, say, high-fiving someone in the moment would reveal nothing, and unless they had something major happen in the last few days he couldn't learn any life-changing facts. This changed when Arou was 10. One rainy night, he had an argument with his only friend, Takeo, while at Takeo's house and left for home himself before his mother arrived. He missed his mother on the road. Meanwhile, his mother and Takeo were caught in the rain and fell off into a ravine at the side of the road. When his mother didn't come home, Arou returned to Takeo's house and was told that his mother had never arrived and that Takeo was also missing. Panicked, Arou prayed desperately for his power to let him "see" where his mother was, touching everything he could. In this heightened state, he became able to "see" the past of the air itself, and merged with the air until it dropped him off right in front of his mother and Takeo. After that day, Arou's "blindfold" was completely off. He started "seeing" the past whenever he touched another, or many objects, whether he wanted to "see" or not. In addition to that, there seemed to be no limit on how far back in time he could "see."

But such prolonged exposure to the rain made Arou's mother fall ill. She never recovered, and died soon after. Arou was devastated (his father traveled frequently for work, so he was particularly close to his mother). He began obsessively taking out his mother's things in order to "see" her again, almost reaching a point of literally living in the past. Horribly concerned about his son, Arou's father ended up burning nearly everything that had connections to his mother, and Arou started to live in the present again.

Arou has repressed most of his memories surrounding the time of his mother's death- they are now hazy at best.

Throughout his life, Arou has had difficulty relating to other people. His family has moved frequently, so he's often been teased or bullied as "the transfer student." On top of that, there's the whole psychic powers issue. People tend to be afraid of him if they find out. Some decide to use him. Throughout middle school, Arou was closed off and hard to approach. Come high school, he has changed tactics. More used to the constant barrage on his senses, he's become a pretty friendly guy. Part of this is because, well, he really is a kind person who wants to be liked by others. Part of it is because it's an even better way of hiding.

But in his second year of high school, upon transferring again to a new school, Arou's world opens up in an interesting way. He meets a girl who can, sometimes, see the future of those she touches. This is where canon begins.

Personality:
The first impression people are likely to have of Arou is of an easygoing, friendly sort of guy. With decent grades, athletic ability, and looks, he seems like the type that would easily be popular. And he does get along with pretty much everyone, but...that's kind of it. He'll smile and pat you on the back in congratulations for your good basketball game. He'll give you part of his homemade lunch if you ask. He'll be part of small talk before class. But then he goes off and does his own thing, on his own. He doesn't really talk about himself, or actively seek others out (unless they have a "power" too). A teacher comments at one point that Arou always seems to be holding himself back, to be keeping himself in the background. It's true - he is.

Arou, in general, tries not to involve himself in other peoples' lives. The things he sees, after all, aren't things he can change. And even people who have accepted his power at first have grown to fear or dislike him because of it - it's better not to give people a chance to find out.

But in spite of his seemingly detached policy, he's actually a very emotional guy. And for all that he's willing to state a "hands off" policy, when he's faced with a chance to help others he'll nearly always take it. He doesn't seek out crimes to solve, but when faced with things like a sign asking for information from possible witnesses to a hit-and-run, he'll "look" and give the authorities the information he finds. While he often keeps the things he "sees" about others to himself, he can't help but be emotionally caught up in what he's "seen." This is what inspires him to join the gardening club ("join" here meaning restart, since there were no current members) - Arou "sees" the passion a former teacher had for it and is inspired to try it out. He likes people and can empathize with them pretty easily. He'll do his best to keep their stories to himself unless he has reason not to (reason like inspiring them to change their current behavior), but he does care about them.

His emotional involvement can also be a problem, as it can become over-involvement. When a boy makes accusations about an old man with a tragic past who Arou had been spending some time with, Arou gets pissed and threatens the boy using his power. A pissed-off Arou is a very frightening person to be around. Arou can also be a bit of a jealous boyfriend, and can be a little smug about things he's accomplished or actually feels secure in.

Basically, while he seems like a cool guy at first, Arou is, in fact, a massive dork. He blushes easily, not just in response to the girl he likes, but in response to things like seeing vegetables he planted begin to produce fruit. He'll take things foolishly seriously, doing things like getting depressed that he'll get dirt on his girlfriend if he touches her. When he gets involved in or excited about something, he has a hard time stopping. His garden ends up taking up the entire back yard of the school before the student council makes him cut it back. He just got carried away. He's not used to being close to people or being generally well-liked, and, well, it will show. (He can be kind of a pushover as well - doing things like cooking for his own birthday.)

tl;dr - Tall, dark, and dorky.

Other:
After his mother died, Arou took up cooking. At this point he seems to have basically reached the level of a professional chef just through constant diligence.

It's never outright stated that the reason his family moves a lot (and Arou frequently changes schools) is because of people finding out about Arou's power, but it's a likely explanation, or at least a contributing factor.

Have I mentioned that he is a hopeless dork because he is an absolutely hopeless dork.

First Person:
Summer and winter are the most popular seasons, but what about spring and autumn? Which do you prefer and what is your favorite activity to do during that season?

I love spring. The way everything warms up and starts growing...it's really refreshing. Ah, but autumn is the harvest season, so there are a lot of great things to do then... It's hard to choose!

Do you believe in fate? Why or why not?

That's hard to say, isn't it? I think...there are some things that can't be helped. But there are things that can be changed, too.

One of your greatest secrets has just been exposed to the people close to you. What do you do?

That depends on how they feel, doesn't it? I wouldn't want to make things hard for them.

You find a wallet on the side of the road, but there's no one around. What do you do with it?

I'd do my best to find the owner. They'd be needing it.

You're at the scene of a robbery, but you manage to get the upper hand; you're holding the gun. The robber is at your mercy. What do you do?

If there were other people at the scene, I would want to make sure they got away safely before anything else. Then I'd call the police and let them take care of things.

Do you have any strong memories that have stuck with you from your childhood? Why are they so powerful and lasting?

I...have a lot of memories of my mother. She really took good care of me, even though she wasn't well a lot of the time.

How do you normally dress? Why do you dress that way?

I don't think I have a really particular way of dressing...I just wear what's comfortable. Jeans, t-shirts, sweaters in winter, stuff like that. And my school uniform, of course.

Do you have any dreams or ambitions? How do you intend to achieve them?

Huh? Well, I'd like to learn how to cook more things from different cuisines. My Italian is still pretty basic, and I haven't tried many things from Thailand or India. I'd like to get better at the dishes I know how to make, too! I haven't really thought about it much, but it'd be nice to be a professional cook or something like that. I need to finish high school first, though.

How do you feel about your hometown? What do you think the people there would say about you?

We've always moved a lot, so I guess I don't really have a hometown. We've lived in a lot of different parts of this city by now, though - does that count?

You just caught your best friend making out with the senpai you really want to notice you! What's your response?

What kind of question is that?

Third Person:
The farther he got from the school building, the easier the ground was to work with. Arou wasn't sure whether this was because the earth was looser because fewer people walked on it here, or if he was just getting more used to the work. Either way, it was a bit of a relief. As satisfying as the planting and growing was, it was still a lot of work for one student.

Wiping his forehead with the back of his gloved hand, Arou inspected the new row of winter squash. They looked to be placed correctly, far enough apart that they could flourish. This entire area certainly got enough sunlight - it must be why the garden club had chosen to start here, all those years ago. He smiled. The winter squash would make a good addition to the lettuces, beans, and summer squash. He only wished he had started early enough to plant some peppers as well. Maybe next year.

Next year? Turning, he looked back at the school building. There was the area where he, Kanade, and Namiki ate the lunches he made. Moving his gaze upwards, there was the room where he knew Kanade would be painting with the rest of the fine arts club right now. Yes, he'd still be at this school next year. He would make sure of it.

Arou returned his attention to the garden in front of him. Maybe he should add another row or two of winter squash. It would be nice to have that in the fall, wouldn't it?
